British novelist George Orwell (1903–1950) authored
The author participated in the Spanish Civil War and was injured. He regarded himself as a democratic socialist and had a strong hatred for totalitarianism.
The novel "1984" was published in 1949. The work depicts a terrifying totalitarian regime in a future society. In such a society, human rights are trampled upon, individuals engage in hopeless struggles, and ultimately must face an extraordinarily powerful social reality.
The protagonist, Winston, yearns for truth and justice, but in a social system where personal space is completely obliterated and deviation from orthodox thought is punishable by death, Winston ultimately realizes the insignificance of the individual and the hopelessness of the struggle.
He once experienced a romance, but it ended when he was arrested by the Thought Police. During months of imprisonment, he was subjected to severe torture and brainwashing, and later he was released from prison. By that time, he had become a completely tamed person who willingly submitted to society.
